The AE86, some photo’s that stuck

soo back in 1998/1999 I came across some photo’s that really changed the course of what i was gonna do for the next 5 years or so about the style and type of car i was going to focus on building. the focus was a more pure sports car, small high revving engines where nothing new to me, but rwd (rear wheel drive) was new and so was really getting into car control, both up to the limit of grip and beyond the grip and into controlling a slide. the ae86 corolla’s became the coolest car to me, they were dirt cheap, soo easy to modify, and pretty quick in the corners…. altho back then there were no parts that you could just go out and buy, so the “ghetto mods” started with cutting springs and lead to building our own front coilovers and, in the rear, using better cut springs….
it was awesome for those 4-5 years…. but then the cars became expensive due to popularity, and there were better cars to be had for less money, there were so many parts that became available it was not longer and car you built with creativity but a car you just bought and bolted together, then there was the widebody kits and fiberglass everything (I’m not a fan except in the occasional bumper, sheet metal all the way, work the original body out to fit those wheels) and then the “scene” (ewww) and organized drift events (to me an oxymoron). and so i moved on after “building” 3 corollas, but I wanted to show you some of the early photo’s that really stuck for me.

Funny hearing a younger generation saying RWD was new. The first FWD to hit America (Canada) was the Peugot, 204 & 304. I had one (304). Citroen also came on with the ever famous front drive, hydraulique suspension. Then came Audi and Saab, America and Japan bought into FWD around 1975, and there was no turning back.
So your generation was brought up with FWD, except for the tanks, like your Mom used to drive (Ford). Today you have to buy a truck to get RWD. I bet those would make great drifters too. Hey a new sport, “truck drifting” or does it already exist? I wish I were young again. We used to turn doughnuts in our days which is the ultimate drift of course, but a real tire burner, whew $$$. Great blog. Job

Yeah most people I know, remember our parents old cars that were these big old slow RWD tanks and that really left a bad taste in our mouths. but by then time we were all 14-15-16 years old our parents had all moved on to honda civics (1990 civic dx 4dr in my case) or acuras ..ect and those cars were light years ahead when it came to handling (our civic had 4 wheel double wishbone suspension) and even tho they didn’t have lotsa guts they had something else that was also new to us…. throttle response! In my case me and nathan would love driving around in our parents car, it was cool to be seen in, plus it could do 190kph and still handle well.

so we all just forgot about rwd as if it was failure, but then we started noticing trends in japan, and then we discovered the cars that are now very popular here like the nissan 240sx, maxda rx7, toyota corolla(85-87 rwd), and more recently people are really starting to notice the mazda miata for the early 90’s (finally getting cheap enough).

i love both and have respect for both fwd and rwd….. but for either of them to be any good they need to be light, nimble and have a responsive engine.

190km/hr in your Mother’e Ford! I hope she doesn’t read this blog.
Actually I used to drag-race with my father’s 1969 Rambler wagon. He’s dead now so I can talk about it.(LOL) Had a 287 V8, with amazing torque. When I think back, it was crazy, but hey. The young and the reckless, still true today obviously.

actually the 190 was in the civic, doing 190 in either the ford crown vic or the chevy impala was down right scary.
